اولا من الواضح ان هذا التعبير هو كلمات رب المجد فقد نقلها عنه متي البشير في 

انجيل متي 10

14 وَمَنْ لاَ يَقْبَلُكُمْ وَلاَ يَسْمَعُ كَلاَمَكُمْ فَاخْرُجُوا خَارِجًا مِنْ ذلِكَ الْبَيْتِ أَوْ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْمَدِينَةِ، وَانْفُضُوا غُبَارَ أَرْجُلِكُمْ.
15 اَلْحَقَّ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: سَتَكُونُ لأَرْضِ سَدُومَ وَعَمُورَةَ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ حَالَةٌ أَكْثَرُ احْتِمَالاً مِمَّا لِتِلْكَ الْمَدِينَةِ.

لو كان نقلها النساخ لكانوا نقلوها نصا بدون تغيير فالمقطع في مرقس يوناني يقول 

ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ἀνεκτοτερον ἔσται Σοδόμοις  Γομόρροις ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως, ἤ τῇ πόλει ἐκείνη

والعدد في متي يقول

ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται γῇ Σοδόμων καὶ Γομόρρων ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἢ τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ

فهذا الاختلاف يوضح انه لم ينقل من متي بل هو تعبير اصيل رب المجد ذكره متي وذكره مرقص بنفس المعني مع تميز في الاسلوب

نفض التراب إنما يعني أن الكارز قد احتمل مشاق الطريق الطويل، وقد صار تراب الطريق نفسه شاهدًا على رافضي الكلمة. وربما يعني أنهم لم يتقدموا إليهم بالكرازة لغرض مادي، فإنه حتى التراب الذي لصق بأرجلهم أثناء قدومهم إليهم ينفضونه على عتبة أبوابهم. إنهم يتركون لهم كل شيءٍ شهادة عليهم.

يرى القديس يوحنا الذهبي الفم في هذا التصرف "علامة مرعبة"، تجعل التلاميذ لا يفقدون جراءتهم بل يزدادون شجاعة، فإنهم يعلنون أنهم ينفضون كل ما هو مادي، يتركون لهم ترابهم وفكرهم الأرضي، ليعيشوا ملتصقين بما هو سماوي[156]. يقول القديس يوحنا الذهبي الفم بأن هذا الفكر يقوم على ما اعتاده اليهود قديمًا حينما كانوا ينطلقون خارج فلسطين، ففي عودتهم إليها ثانية ينفضون الغبار قبيل دخولهم الأرض المقدسة، ليعلنوا أنهم عادوا إلى أرض الموعد، لا يحملون دنس العالم الوثني وترابه، بل هم بالحق محبون للقداسة[157].

يعلق القديس أمبروسيوس على هذا التصرف في تفسيره إنجيل لوقا بالقول: [يأمرنا الرب أن نترك من كان إيمانه سقيمًا أو كان البيت هرطوقيًا فنهرب منه. يجب أن ننفض غبار أرجلنا حتى لا يعوق جفاف الأرض الملتوية النابع عن إيمان سقيم مجدب كالأرض البور الرملية طريقك الروحي. فإن كان من واجب الكارز بالإنجيل أن يأخذ على عاتقه ضعفات المؤمنين الجسدية، ويحملها بعيدًا، ويسحق تحت قدميه أعمالهم البطالة الشبيهة بالغبار، كما هو مكتوب: "من يضعف وأنا لا أضعف(2 كو 11: 51)، فإنه يلزم المؤمن أيضًا أن يبتعد عن الكنيسة التي ترفض الإيمان، المبنية على أساس غير الإيمان الرسولي لئلا ينخدع ويضلله الإيمان السقيم، هذا ما يؤكده الرسول بقوله: "الرجل المبتدع بعد الإنذار مرة ومرتين أعرض عنه" (تي 3: 10).]
