علم السيِّد المسيح ما كان يجول بخُلد إبليس، فلم يغيِّر الخبز ولم يعلن عجزه عن تغييره. اِنتهر المسيح الشيطان بالقول: "ليس بالخبز وحده يحيا الإنسان" (لو4: 5). ومعنى ذلك أنه إذا منح الله الإنسان القوَّة أمكنه أن يحيا بدون أكل، وعاش كما عاش موسى وإيليَّا بقوَّة أربعين يومًا ولم يذوقا شيئًا، فإذًا استطاع المسيح أن يعيش بدون طعام، فلم يحوِّل الحجر خبزًا إلا أن المسيح لم يقل قط أنه "لا يستطيع ذلك" حتى لا يتطرَّق الشك بأنه إنسان لا إله، ولم يقل أستطيع ذلك لئلا يتركه الشيطان وشأنه، وكان المسيح يريد تعليمنا دروسًا أخرى.
لاحظوا يا أحبائي كيف أن طبيعة المسيح نبذَت شراهة آدم ونهمه، فبأكل آدم غُلبنا، وبزهد المسيح انتصرنا.
الجسم يأكل ما تُخرجه الأرض من دسم، أما النفس العاقلة فطعامها كلمة الله الخالدة. فإن الخبز الذي تجود به الأرض يُغذي جسمًا عناصره هي عناصر الخبز الأرضي، أما الخبز السماوي الذي يبعث به الله من فوق يُغذِّي النفس الباقية. هذا هو الخبز السماوي الذي يتغذَّى به جمهور الملائكة.

ينكشف لنا من هذه التجربة أن لإبليس ثلاثة سهام اعتاد أن يستخدمها ليجْرح قلب الإنسان: شهوة الأكل، المجد الباطل، الطمع! (يبدأ من حيث اِنتصر إبليس) هكذا تبدأ نُصرتي في المسيح من حيث غلبني إبليس في آدم...
يقول: "إن كنتَ ابن الله"، فقد كان إبليس يعلم تمامًا أنه ينبغي أن يأتي ابن الله، لكنه لم يكن يعتقد أنه يأتي في ضعف، لهذا أراد أن يتأكَّد ثم يُجرِّبه بعد ذلك...
انظروا أسلحة المسيح التي بها اِنتصر من أجلكم وليس لأجل نفسه، فإنه قادر أن يحوِّل العناصر (كما في عرس قانا الجليل)، لكنه يعلِّمنا ألا نطيع إبليس في شيء، ولا لإظهار قوَّتَك. لنعرف أيضًا من هذه التجربة مهارة إبليس الخادعة فهو يجُرِّب ليتأكَّد من الحقيقة ليخترق الإنسان ويُجرِّبه... ولم يستخدم الرب سلطانه كإله وإلا فإننا لم نكن نجني فائدة، إنما استخدم الإمكانيَّة العامة وهي استخدام كلام الله.

قل لهذا "الحجر"، أي حجر هو هذا؟ بلا شك الحجر الذي كان إبليس يريه إيّاه طالبًا أن يحوِّله إلى خبز. إذن ما هي التجربة؟...
الشيطان العدو المخادع يقدِّم حجرًا عوض الخبز (لو11: 11). هذا ما يريده الشيطان أن يتحوَّل الحجر إلى خبز، فينمو الناس لا على الخبز، وإنما على الحجر الذي يُريه الشيطان على شكل خبز. وإنني اعتقد أن الشيطان لا يزال يُرينا الحجر ويقول لكل أحد: "قل لهذا الحجر أن يصير خبزًا..." فإن رأيت الهراطقة يأكلون تعاليمهم الكاذبة كخبزٍ، فاِعلم أن مناقشاتهم وتعاليمهم هي الحجر الذي يُظهره الشيطان لنأكله كخبز...
لنسهر إذن ولا نأكل حجارة الشيطان ظانِّين أننا ننمو بخبز الرب[168]...
