:

the Textus Receptus adds σκληρόνσοιπρςκέντραλακτίζειν. (6) τρέμωντεκαθαμβνεπε, Κύριε, τίμεθέλειςποισαι; καὶὁκύριος πρςατόν, which is rendered in the AV as follows: "it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. (6) And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him." So far as is known, no Greek witness reads these words at this place; they have been taken from 26.14 and 22.10, and are found here in codices of the Vulgate, with which it, syr cop substantially agree (all except the Vulgate add after θαμβν the words πτγεγονότιατῷ, taken from 3.10). The spurious passage came into the Textus Receptus when Erasmus translated it from the Latin Vulgate into Greek and inserted it in his first
edition of the Greek New Testament (Basel, 1516). See p. 8* above
.
A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament by Bruce M. Metzger page 318

Metzger, The Text of the New Testament, pp. 99-100

:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erasmus

:
Scrivener showed that some textes were incorporated from the
Vulgate (f.e. Acts 9:6; Rev 17:4.8).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Textus_Receptus

:Mediavel and Reformation church history by christopher lensh,S.T.M ,

in a hurry to publish; had only a few late manuscripts; translated from Vulgate back into Greek where no Greek manuscript available (including last six verses of Revelation, other verses in Revelation, question in Acts 9:6

E and 431

itar itc ith itl itp itph itt

vgcl

The Epistle of Ignatius to the Philadelphians

For the archives ought not to be preferred to the Spirit. [952] "It is hard to kick against the pricks;" [953] it is hard to disbelieve Christ; it is hard to reject the preaching of the apostles.

Volume 1 page 116

Chapter 20.--44. Petilianus said: "

The Lord Christ cries again from heaven to Paul, `Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.' [2035] He was then called Saul that he might afterwards receive his true name in baptism.

Volume 4

Chapter 21.--47. Petilianus said:

"Accordingly, as we have said, the Lord Christ cried, `Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, who art Thou, Lord? And the Lord said,. I am Christ of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Volume 4

alla

the Textus Receptus adds σκληρόνσοιπρςκέντραλακτίζειν.
See p. 8* above

The first New Testament printed in Greek was part of the Complutensian Polyglot. This portion was printed in 1514, but publication was delayed until 1522 by waiting for the Old Testament portion, and the sanction of Pope Leo X.[14] Erasmus had been working for years on two projects: a collation of Greek texts and a fresh Latin New Testament. In 1512, he began his work on this Latin New Testament. He collected all the Vulgate manuscripts he could find to create a critical edition. Then he polished the Latin.

Erasmus used several Greek manuscript sources because he did not have access to a single complete manuscript. Most of the manuscripts were, however, late Greek manuscripts of the Byzantine textual family and Erasmus used the oldest manuscript

Defense of the Textus Receptus

Frederick von Nolan, a 19th century historian and Greek and Latin scholar, spent 28 years attempting to trace the Textus Receptus to apostolic origins. He was an ardent advocate of the supremacy of the Textus Receptus over all other editions of the Greek New Testament, and argued that the first editors of the printed Greek New Testament intentionally selected the texts they did because of their superiority and disregarded other texts which represented other text-types because of their inferiority.

The Textus Receptus was defended by Burgon in his The Revision Revised (1881), and also by Edward Miller in A Guide to the Textual Criticism of the New Testament (1886).

Hills was the first textual critic to defend Textus Receptus. Although others have defended the TR per se, they are either not acknowledged textual critics (e.g. Theodore Letis) or their works are not on a scholarly level (e.g., Terence H. Brown or D. A. Waite).[19]

The answer is because of the following:

The following is an excerpt from Dr. Thomas Holland's Crowned With Glory, ©2000, used with permission.

Acts 9:5-6 - "it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks"

"And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do."

The phrase from verse five, "it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks," is in the Old Latin and some Vulgate manuscripts. It is also in the Peshitta and the Greek of Codex E and 431, but in verse four instead of verse five. The passage from verse six that reads, "And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him" is in the Old Latin, the Latin Vulgate, and some of the Old Syrian and Coptic versions. These phrases, however, are not found in the vast majority of Greek manuscripts and therefore do not appear in either the Critical Text or the Majority Text. Yet, they are included in the Textus Receptus. On the surface the textual evidence looks weak. Why, then, should the Textus Receptus be accepted over the majority of Greek witnesses at this point? Because the phrases are preserved in other languages, and the internal evidence establishes that Christ in fact spoke these words at the time of Paul's conversion and are therefore authentic.

Acts chapter nine is not the only place in Scripture where the conversion of Paul is established. In Acts 22:10 and 26:14 we have the testimony of the Apostle himself. There, in all Greek texts, the phrases in question appear.

Tyndale bible (1534) Miles Coverdale's Bible (1535), Matthew's Bible (1500-1555), The Great Bible (1539), Cranmer bible (1539) The Geneva Version (1557), The Bishops' Bible (1568), Rheims bible (1582), and the King James Version (Authorized) (1611)

WICLIF 1380

5 And he seide, who art thou lord? He seide, I am ihesus of Nazareth : whom thou pursuest, it is hard to thee: to kike azens the pricke 6 and he trembled and woundrid and seide, lord what wolt thou that I do ? and the lord seide to hym, rise up and entre in the citee and it schal be seide to thee what it bihoueth thee to do.
